How Often is ISO 9001 Changed and Updated?

The applicability and suitability of ISO 9001 for various companies and organizations can be further expanded via the usage of related standards. For example, ISO 9001 is just the best-known member of the larger ISO 9000 family of standards, which at present includes a total of four documents. These are: ISO 9000:2015, a document describing the fundamentals and vocabulary necessary to properly understand ISO 9001; ISO 9001:2015, the much-discussed central standard that the family revolves around; ISO/TS 9002:2016, a document which provides guidance on the intent of the requirements in ISO 9001 as well as numerous examples of ways that organizations can implement the standard to meet those requirements; and ISO 9004:2018, a document designed to help achieve sustained quality success in an organization and which also includes a self-assessment tool to review the extent to which the organization has adopted the quality management principles outlined in the ISO 9000 family of documents. Besides these, the ISO has also created specialized applications of the quality management principles outlined in ISO 9001 and its related documents, but tailored to specific industries or activity types. For example, the ISO 14000 family of standards provides guidance and practical tools to apply quality management practices to environmental management systems and climate change prevention responsibilities, ISO 13485:2016 specifies requirements for quality management systems which regulate the safety of medical devices, and ISO 19011:2018 provides guidance for creating a management system for auditing other systems (including those mentioned above). Via the use of these related standards, ISO 9001 can potentially be extended to use by all types of organizations and companies.
